Control of microstructural heterogeneities in carbon nanotube foams

چکیده
Arrays of aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) under compression are known to exhibit a dissipative hysteretic response similar to classical foams. Here, we control the microstructure of the arrays during synthesis using a variable supply of carbon source and catalyst. We control CNT alignment and density along the array height, creating bands of highand low-density regions. We study the dynamic response of these materials and show the ability to tailor the location and extent of strain localization under compression. We show that the synthesis procedures described herein allow for construction of CNT arrays with improved protection and energy dissipation in impact tests. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Thermal Characterization of Plain and Carbon Nanotube reinforced Syntactic Foams
Composite materials fabricated using hollow microspheres are called syntactic foams. Particulate filler composites such as syntactic foams, consisting of glass microballoons and epoxy resin, are desirable for applications that require high compressive and impact strengths and low thermal conductivities. However, for heat dissipation applications, filler additions are required to increase the th...

Capillary forces arising during the evaporation of liquids from dense carbon nanotube arrays are used to reassemble the nanotubes into two-dimensional contiguous cellular foams. The stable nanotube foams can be elastically deformed, transferred to other substrates, or floated out to produce free-standing macroscopic fabrics. The lightweight cellular foams made of condensed nanotubes could have ...

متن کاملMultiscale Mass-Spring Model for High-Rate Compression of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Foams
We present a one-dimensional, multiscale mass-spring model to describe the response of vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) foams subjected to uniaxial, high-rate compressive deformations. The model uses mesoscopic dissipative spring elements composed of a lower level chain of asymmetric, bilateral, bistable elastic springs to describe the experimentally observed deformation-dependent str...

We describe the deformation mechanisms and the bulk dynamic response of vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) foams comprised of bands of different densities. The densities of the bands are controlled during synthesis by varying the flow-rate of gas feedstock in discrete steps. We show that the impact response of VACNT foams can be distinctively tailored by introducing heterogeneous bands....
